These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Professionals and technicians under Free Trade Agreements (FTAs)<\/strong> with the U.S., Mexico, Chile, Panama, Peru, Colombia, or South Korea<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spouses or common-law partners<\/strong> of professionals under FTAs with Panama, Colombia, or South Korea<\/li>\n<li><strong>International truck drivers<\/strong> holding a valid work permit and requiring border travel as part of their employment<\/li>\n<li>Individuals with <strong>pre-scheduled appointments<\/strong> with the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Immigration_Ministers_Announcement\"><\/span>Immigration Minister\u2019s Announcement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On <strong>December 17<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/border-services-agency\/news\/2024\/12\/ending-flagpoling-for-work-and-study-permits-at-the-border.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Immigration Minister Marc Miller<\/a> publicly addressed the forthcoming changes. Citing resource allocation and border efficiency, he stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis change will ease border congestion, improve fairness for applicants, and enhance the efficiency and security of our borders.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The decision to end flagpoling stems from the high volume of applicants and the strain it places on both Canadian and American border officials. From <strong>April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024<\/strong>, the <strong>CBSA processed over 69,300 flagpoling applicants<\/strong>, primarily at border entry points in the Pacific, Southern Ontario, and Quebec regions.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Was_Flagpoling_Banned\"><\/span>Why Was Flagpoling Banned?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Flagpoling allowed newcomers to bypass wait times for online permit processing by briefly exiting Canada and re-entering to obtain same-day immigration services at a port of entry.
